Having a sustainable wardrobe is no easy feat.
Today we will look into the wood-based fabrics , understand how they are made and how they impact the quality of our clothes as well as the environment.

WOOD-BASED FABRIC SELECTION

 
LYOCELL, SUSTAINABILITY

🌿 LYOCELL:

  • soft as silk,

  • breathable,

  • lightweight

  • comfortable,

  • durable,

  • strong,

  • wrinkle resistant.

🌿 SUSTAINABILITY: 

  • Closed loop production system using non-toxic chemicals (look for Tencel).

  • Sustainable natural source: Eucalyptus tree.

  • Can be recycled.

  • Biodegradable.

VISCOSE RAYON:

  • soft,

  • comfortable to wear,

  • wrinkle resistant,

  • anti-static,

  • not as strong as natural cotton or linen,

  • tends to shrink when washed.

SUSTAINABILITY: 

  • Requires use of toxic chemicals.

  • Natural source (Bamboo) often is grown with chemical pesticides and fertilisers.

  • Contributes to deforestation.

MODAL: 

  • soft and silky,

  • strong,

  • wear resistant,

  • doesn’t shrink as easily as viscose rayon or cotton.
