10 Pieces, 18 Outfits: A Capsule Wardrobe for Spring

Today, I’m sharing a real-life example: a wardrobe I put together for a client: a tall woman with an XXL size who happens to be an artist living in Germany.

With just 10 well-chosen pieces, she now has 18 outfit possibilities that work for her body, lifestyle, and love of color.

Let’s break it down.

What’s in the Capsule?

✔️ A statement shirt (because every wardrobe needs a little drama)
✔️ Two T-shirts: one simple, one with a fun pattern
✔️ Two sweaters (because Germany in spring is not to be trusted)
✔️ A bold cardigan for extra warmth and personality
✔️ 3 pairs of pants

The goal?

Maximum versatility with minimal effort.

Starting with a Statement Piece

Every good capsule has a star of the show. In this case, it’s an artistic print shirt: the kind of piece that makes you feel put-together even if you’ve barely had coffee. I actually found it in the men’s department, and guess what, the fit was just perfect!

Wear it buttoned up, unbuttoned over a tee, or even as a light jacket. A single piece with three different outfit possibilities.

Now that’s efficiency.

Building Blocks: The T-Shirts

A couple of well-chosen T-shirts make a huge difference.

  • white tee with an abstract design because "plain white" is a little too plain.

  • solid-color tee in a unique shade: something that adds interest without trying too hard.

Tuck them into pants, layer them under sweaters, or wear them with the statement shirt.

Easy. Comfortable. Done.

Sweaters That Feel as Good as They Look

A good sweater should feel like a hug. This capsule includes:

  • An oversized cashmere sweater in soft purple. My client’s instant favorite.

  • high-neck Merino wool sweater. It’s structured but comfy, great tucked or untucked.

Both layer beautifully, which means even more outfit options.

The Power of a Good Cardigan

If a coat feels too heavy but a sweater isn’t quite enough, a long, electric blue cardigan comes to the rescue.

This one adds warmth, movement, and a bold pop of color. Plus, it pairs well with everything: statement shirt, sweaters, T-shirts.

The Right Pants Make All the Difference

A great capsule wardrobe isn’t just about tops.

It’s about having the right pants to balance everything out.

For this capsule, I included three different styles that offer variety without overcomplicating things:

  • Green wide-leg denim – A fresh alternative to classic blue jeans, these add a cool vibe to any outfit.

  • Navy straight-leg chinos – Easy, polished, and comfortable: great for days when you want a bit more structure.

  • Black barrel-leg trousers – A modern, slightly sculptural shape that adds interest without trying too hard.

Each of these works with every single top in the capsule, meaning zero bad outfit days.

And let’s be honest, when you find pants that fit well, you wear them into the ground (as you should).

Who knew 10 pieces could do so much?
