Essential Clothes for Weight Fluctuation.
Here are the essentials clothes for women that go through size changes. Losing weight or gaining weight directly influences what you can do in terms of personal style. You either can’t create an outfit with what you had before, or have to go buy new clothes.
The capsule wardrobe method I teach takes this into consideration. That’s why I’d like to share some fashion tips on how to invest in clothes that easily adapt to your size change. Think of these garments as wardrobe essentials that you can include in your personal style guide, so you can use them whenever you deal with body changes.
Defining your current unique body proportions is very important before you go into your wardrobe, do a revision and apply these tips. It will help you understand what cuts and designs will make you look your best.
I’m sure pregnant women or new mothers will find these fashion tips on how to adapt their wardrobe to their new size very useful. Let’s get into it.
Essential clothes for size changes.
Tops
When it comes to tops, your best option is to find one that has a straight cut with a medium heavy fabric like silk, tencel, cotton, wool or velvet. These kind of tops drape nicely around your torso. Nothing is exposed and so when you gain or lose some weight it won’t be so obvious that it’s a little too big. (Brand: Tinsels)

Another option could be a wrap around cut or a multipurpose top. This would be a great investment as you can adjust it to your new body size all the time. (Brands: Hackwith, Miranda Bennett, Wray)
Form-fitted or tight tops might make you feel uncomfortable at least until you get to the shape you want. That’s why a loose cut might be an option if you’re just fluctuating between 1-2 sizes. In case you’ve lost a lot of weight, they will look too oversized on you eventually, so it’s not a very practical investment.
Skirts
I think wrap skirts and skirts with an elastic waistline will give you outfit options for a very long time, because you can easily adjust them as your size changes.
If you like to wear tailored pencil skirts or skirts with an accentuated waistline, you can go for it, but choose the ones that are not too tight. The beauty of this type of skirt is that when you lose weight it can easily be brought down in size with the help of your local tailor.

Trousers
Trousers that have an elastic waistband are great because, again, you can adjust them to your size. Sometimes you can also find trousers that have an elastic waistband only on the back. They don’t look so casual, so they can be a perfect option for work outfits.
High-waisted, peg-top trousers could be a nice option as you can also regulate their size with a belt.
There are also wraparound trousers you can try. These are practical and I think they look especially stylish in summer.
Tight, wide-leg trousers with a fixed waistline can be an option for now, but they might prove problematic in the future as altering them will affect their design.

Sweaters
My advice here is the same as with the tops: go with a straight cut and medium thick wool on. If you lose weight, they won’t look bulky, but drape nicely around your body. One shoulder loose fitted sweaters can be another option for a more feminine and casual look.

Dresses
For dresses you can try many options: wraparound, straight, flared or even loose. Wraparound is nice because you can adjust it to your size easily. A straight cut and a flared one with a fixed waistline can be altered very quickly in the future. And if you want to have a loose silhouette, I would go for something that can be worn with a belt. The belt will accentuate your waistline and create a more fitted silhouette now and when you get to your desired size.
Another good option is a dress with buttons on the front. Because it will look great now, and later on, when it’s way too big, you can wear it as a summer duster.
I’d advise you to avoid buying dresses for special occasions if you’ve gained weight or you’re in the process of losing weight. Evening and cocktail dresses are expensive and usually have some special design and elements that can be hard to alter. A better and cheaper alternative is to rent a dress in your size instead of buying a new one that you won’t be able to wear in the future.

Capsule wardrobe example.
I hope now you have a better understanding of what cut and shapes to choose for your wardrobe while your weight fluctuates. Now let’s see how all of these kind of items can look as a fully interchangeable wardrobe, so you can get outfit ideas for your own closet.
I’ve prepared a Wonder Wardrobe example that consists of 6 tops, 4 bottoms, 2 dresses, 1 jumpsuit, 1 cardigan, 1 blazer, a trenchcoat, 2 pairs of shoes and 2 bags. When I combine these items together I get at least 35 interchangeable outfits.
Colour type: Winter.
Style: Casual style with creative and classic elements.
Body Proportions: Soft or Round body lines, Long vertical proportions.
Method: Wonder Wardrobe.
Wonder wardrobe: 35 outfits.
As you can see from this little example, you don’t have to dread the change your body is going through when it comes to your clothes. Before buying anything new, I would suggest looking at what you already have to see if a tailor can help you out. You might have to invest in some new items after that. But if you take care when choosing the right material, design and fit, you can easily put together a wardrobe that changes, and adapts to your new body.
