Classic style capsule wardrobe colorful items for winter

These winter outfit ideas in a Classic Fashion Style will show you how to adapt your personal style to the cold season with ease.

My student Flora noticed that creating a capsule wardrobe in a classic-romantic style for winter is not as easy as a summer capsule wardrobe in the same style. Especially when it comes to skirts and dresses.

The modern classic-romantic style can easily be replicated if you use fashion matching in your own personal fashion style. You’ll see below plenty of fashion tips that will help you create winter outfits with clothing you already have in your closet.

Classic Style Winter Wardrobe: 44 outfit ideas

In this video, I’ve gone item by item, giving you outfit ideas so you can have a clearer idea of how these styles can be represented during these cold months.

What is a Classic Romantic Fashion Style?

Classic-romantic is a style that can be expressed through classic, elegant clothing with a lady-like, feminine, and timeless design. This style was born in the 1950s and wasn’t called classic, of course.

Back then, high-waisted, pencil and flared skirts, tailored trousers paired with silk blouses, and fitted jackets looked very new and trendy.

And so these fashion icons were created.

The most famous is probably Audrey Hepburn with her timeless and elegant style. She popularized straight, tailored cropped pants, boatneck tops, accentuated waistlines, and comfortable ballet shoes or even loafers.

Another fashion icon with this style was Jackie Kennedy. The colorful matching sets, simple fitted dresses, pillbox hats, elegant scarves worn over her hair, tailored trousers, silk blouses, and elegant coats inspired generations of women to take note back in the 60s.

Nowadays this style is considered a classic and is still very popular all around the world. It’s not that restrictive anymore, no one is wearing corsets, or little hats and gloves. In my opinion, the modern interpretation of a classic style is more about simple elegance, good tailoring, and delicate femininity.

Here are some essential items that any classic woman should have in her winter wardrobe.

Essential items: Classic Fashion Style

Winter Capsule Wardrobe: SKIRTS

The best option for skits is knee or midi-length pencil, straight or flared-cut ones, made out of some warm materials like wool, corduroy, velvet, or even leather. I'm sure there are plenty of outfit ideas you can come up with by taking a look in your own closet.

For extra warmth, I’d advise wearing your skirt with thick wool tights, high boots, and a long outerwear piece.

Winter Capsule Wardrobe: TROUSERS

Classic Fashion Style Trousers

The most common cut and that doesn't seem to ever go out of style is a classic long straight or flared pair of pants with a crease and high waist. A good pair of pants or more can get add style points to any winter capsule wardrobe.

You can mix and match a pair of pants with a sweater, blouse, shirt, or in an outfit that is more weather appropriate for your climate.

Another option could be cropped and fitted pants, similar to the chic pants that Audrey Hepburn made so popular. The best material for pants in winter is wool because it keeps the shape very well, is warm and more durable.

Winter Capsule Wardrobe: BLOUSES

The most functional and comfortable cut for a classic-romantic style outfit is a straight or fitted cut blouse with some feminine details like a boat neck, lace, bell sleeves, puffy shoulders, bows, or a floral pattern.

This style guide should give you plenty of options for your closet so you can dress accordingly to the cold season.

When you’re choosing a blouse for winter, keep in mind that you might need to wear it with a cardigan or sweater on top for extra warmth.

Coats are also something that will add an extra element of style, but on that a bit later. For now, I would avoid anything voluminous or too complicated in design in your winter capsule wardrobe.

Winter Capsule Wardrobe: SWEATERS

The best sweater cuts for your winter wardrobe are straight or fitted. Both sweater options are quite versatile and can be worn year-round.

A straight cut is nice to have for layering and fitted ones you can use as stand-alone tops.

To add variety choose different colors and necklines: boat neck, round neck, scoop, and square ones look very elegant.

Winter Capsule Wardrobe: JEANS

Jeans are probably not your favorite item to wear but they can be quite warm, practical and become a nice alternative to your wool trousers.

For a sophisticated look choose skinny, straight, or long flared cuts in classic colors.

Winter Capsule Outfit Ideas: DRESSES

Classic Fashion Style Dresses

The perfect winter dress for this style is a fitted one with a pencil or flared skirt and accentuated waistline.

Another option could be a sleeveless dress that allows you to wear different tops underneath, play with color, and have a bit more variety.

Winter Outfit Ideas: JACKETS

The real problems come when you need to choose a warm, snow-proof jacket for this style.

The puffer jacket is not elegant in most cases, but it’s the only wind-waterproof option. So, I’d try to find something that is at least a little feminine.

It could be a nice wool coat. Anything that has an accentuated waistline or a more defined shape will help you create a complete winter outfit.

Winter Outfit Ideas: BOOTS

The most practical and versatile boots for this style are high or ankle boots, with delicate, classic designs, and high or medium heels.

If you prefer to wear flats, you can opt for a pointy-toe Chelsea boot or a version of a tight-fitting riding boot. You can always add a more classical look by paying attention to the pair of shoes you pick.

Winter Outfit Ideas: ACCESSORIES

The perfect accessory for this style is a silk or fine wool scarf. This is something that can add a bit more texture, lightness, and color to your outfits.

Wear them around your neck, tied on your bag, or even instead of a hat for a more sophisticated look.

As you will wear more trousers, it might be a good idea to invest in belts as well.

A nice, smooth classic belt will help to accentuate your waistline and make the outfit look finished and refined.

Of course, these are just general recommendations about the cuts, materials, and silhouettes that fit this beautiful, feminine style.

To make it more personal you need to add elements that express your taste and personality.

This can be the way you use color, mix textures, or how you style your clothes together.

Now let’s put theory into practice and take a look at the classic-romantic winter wonder wardrobe I prepared for you today.

Winter Capsule Wardrobe Details and Styling

For my tops, I chose 5 wool sweaters and 2 silk blouses. All sweaters have various cuts, and necklines and differ in thickness.

The chic cardigan was chosen with the thought that it could be worn by itself or on top of silk blouses.

For bottoms, I found these 2 skirts. Both are warm, long, elegant, and quite practical.

I also have 3 pairs of trousers, all are tailored and high-waisted.

I’ve also included a pair of classic flared jeans. Even though they are not on-trend at the moment, I think this shape is one of the most flattering. It visually slims and elongates your silhouette.

For the top layer, I added 2 puffer jackets and one coat.

I love the color of this short warm jacket. It’s beautiful, happy, energizing, and fits here very well.

The long coat is a little more elegant, it has a belt so it’s more fitted as well.

And finally, I found this beautiful wool coat, which I thought could be a nice option for warmer days. Plus, it’s reversible, so you get 2 coats in one.

Winter Capsule Wardrobe: Finishing Touches

Overall, I think this winter wardrobe came out to be elegant, modern, feminine, and most importantly, warm for the cold season.

The finishing touches are yours to make. As you can see, I didn't add leggings, white sneakers, or skinny jeans because of the classic romantic fashion style that doesn't need them.

If you do need a pair of white sneakers or a different pair of boots that are more adequate for the cold weather you're experiencing, it's up to you to adapt the rest of the capsule wardrobe so that everything goes well together.

You can also look at your basic items and create something chic by adding the right blazer or any other essential items that fit the classic fashion style.

Removing some of the layers will help you dress more suitable for the fall season for example. Your closet is the best place to start.

Build slowly and consciously so everything is a good mix-and-match.

I hope this blog post gave you ideas and inspiration for your style, winter outfit, and overall winter wardrobe.
